When Should You Schedule Maternity Photos? A Complete Guide for Colorado Moms
Pregnancy is filled with so many exciting milestones, and one of my favorite moments to capture is the anticipation of meeting your little one.
One of the first questions I hear from expecting moms is:
"When should I schedule my maternity photos?"
The short answer? Most maternity sessions take place between 30 and 34 weeks.
During this stage of pregnancy, your baby bump is beautifully defined, but you're usually still comfortable enough to walk, move, and enjoy your session. It's the sweet spot where we can create beautiful images without you feeling rushed or uncomfortable.
As a Castle Rock maternity photographer, my goal is to make your session feel relaxed, meaningful, and enjoyable—so you can focus on this incredible season of life.
Why 30–34 Weeks Is the Ideal Time
Every pregnancy is unique, but for most moms, the 30–34 week window offers the perfect balance.
By this point:
Your bump has a beautiful, round shape.
You're likely still comfortable walking short distances.
We have flexibility in case your baby decides to arrive a little early.
You can move naturally and enjoy your session without feeling exhausted.
If you're expecting twins or have a high-risk pregnancy, I may recommend scheduling a bit earlier. We'll talk through your situation and find the timing that feels right for you.
When Should You Book Your Session?
Although the photos themselves are usually taken around 30–34 weeks, I recommend reaching out much earlier.
Many families book their maternity session during the second trimester, especially if they're hoping for a specific season, location, or weekend date.
Booking early also gives us plenty of time to plan your session, discuss outfits, and choose the perfect location.
The Best Time of Day for Maternity Photos
Lighting makes all the difference.
That's why most of my outdoor maternity sessions take place during golden hour—the hour just before sunset.
The soft, warm light creates flattering skin tones, beautiful depth, and a dreamy glow that perfectly complements this special season.
Some of my favorite maternity locations are in Castle Rock, Parker, Castle Pines, Larkspur, and throughout the Denver South Metro, where Colorado's natural beauty provides a stunning backdrop.
What Should You Wear?
Your maternity session should feel elegant, comfortable, and true to you.
Flowing dresses are always a beautiful choice because they add movement and naturally highlight your growing bump. Soft fabrics, neutral tones, and earthy colors photograph beautifully against Colorado's landscapes.
If your partner or children will be joining the session, we'll coordinate everyone's outfits so they complement one another without matching exactly.
Once you're booked, I'll send you a detailed styling guide with outfit inspiration and tips to make planning easy.
Can My Partner and Children Be Included?
Absolutely.
Your maternity session isn't just about documenting your pregnancy—it's about celebrating your growing family.
Partners, siblings, and even four-legged family members are always welcome. Some of the most meaningful images come from quiet moments shared together as you prepare to welcome your newest addition.
What If I'm Not Comfortable in Front of the Camera?
You're not alone.
Almost every expecting mom tells me this before her session.
The good news is that you don't need modeling experience or perfect poses.
I'll gently guide you throughout the entire session, helping you feel comfortable every step of the way. My approach is relaxed and natural, focusing on genuine connection rather than stiff poses.
The goal is to create photographs that feel authentic—not forced.
Why Maternity Photos Matter
Pregnancy can feel long while you're living it, but once your baby arrives, it becomes one of the shortest seasons of your life.
Before you know it, tiny kicks become tiny fingers wrapped around yours. The anticipation of waiting becomes the beautiful chaos of parenthood.
Maternity photographs give you a chance to pause and remember this chapter before everything changes.
Years from now, you'll look back and remember not just what you looked like—but how it felt to be waiting for the little person who would soon change your world forever.
Let's Celebrate This Season Together
Whether you're expecting your first baby or adding another little one to your family, I'd be honored to help you preserve this incredible chapter.
Together, we'll choose the perfect location, plan outfits that make you feel confident, and create timeless images you'll treasure for generations.
